Drupal

As a basic definition, a content management system (CMS) lets you create and edit web pages without requiring a knowledge of code. But a good CMS can do more than that– letting you create photo galleries, online stores, news archives, blogs, forums, and more. And there are now a lot of content management systems to choose from. So where do you begin?

My Choice

Drupal is one of the most popular and widely used content management systems (CMS) in the world. And it's now my CMS of choice–usually the basis for every site I build. Ecommerce sites, informational sites, corporate sites, nonprofit sites, and more, all can do so much more when I build them with Drupal.

Why It's Great

Drupal is great for many reasons, but here's some of my favorite:

  • Open-source software, meaning there's no licensing fees or ongoing software expense
  • Powerful and flexible tools, extendible through hundreds of user-contributed modules
  • Large community of supporters means frequent updates, new features, and broad range of support
  • You (the client) aren't dependent on a proprietary system, meaning you can take your site, your code, and the CMS with you to any developer you want.

Who Uses It?

Large corporations, universities, non-profits, small businesses... even this site uses Drupal. Some of the higher profile groups using Drupal include the White House, Sony, and Fast Company. Drupal founder, Dries Buytaert, tracks who's using Drupal on his personal blog.

How Do You Say It?

It's pronounced "DROO-pull", not "droo-PAHL". I know, it's weird. It's Dutch, it means "drop".
